Fall is coming. Fall is coming! My favorite time of year is around the corner and we are all anxiously pulling out our sweaters and boots, prepping for some major fall fashion. Looking good and feeling good, even in colder temperatures; seems to make the changes in weather something to look forward too.
Well, that and the natural design makeover mother- earth gives the planet around this time of the year. Warm tones replace green ones on the trees and everything gets a little cozier and cooler. The feelings that are associated with your surroundings can have a major impact on your mood in that space.
In the interest of my overall happiness I love a bright welcoming home to settle into and fuel my creativity. I can never seem to focus well in dimly lit, cluttered spaces. My inspiration and focus manifests its strongest when the surrounding aesthetic is calming, minimalist, and clean with a cozy relaxed feel.
Dark rooms are usually not the most inviting of spaces… think basement, attic … the creepy alley you avoid. All that jazz. When it comes to your home, the creepy dark vibe is not quite the homiest of vibes. Bright inviting spaces flooded with light and open space seem to be #decorinspo on every social platform you look. And why not, but can you recreate that same refreshed high-end look in your own home. This is the question I had to ask myself when moving into my new place, with a dark colored couch nonetheless (Not a great start to my light and bright goals) . Well lit with windows, my living has the potential to be flooded with light but a large amount of trees surrounding my view blocks out the sun. (Which I must say makes for good bird watching for my kitten Sylvester and I )
With my goal to create the coziest home that I can,; still pushing my design skills to the test, I found myself thinking of ways to increase the illusion of light without chopping down the beautiful trees near my home. Check out the tips below to add light and brightness to your home in some easy and interesting ways. Shop some of my recent favorite finds for each design trend below.
A good coat of paint can do wonders for a space that needs a lift in the color department. Bright and off whites can be any key way to brighten up a space, but don’t discount neutral and cool tones like blues and grays. These tones can brighten up a space without opting in for white only. The science and psychology of color suggest that different colors evoke different moods and can enhance or inhibit creativity and positive energy.

Those big heavy grandma curtains and that super dark rug – time to take those down. Fabrics such as throws, curtains, and area rugs are great ways to draw the eye and light into the room. You can even make them the focal point by choosing an interesting pattern or statement color.

Open space is a gift for a dark room . Can you downsize some of the furniture in your room to be less cluttered? Opt for light and smaller furniture pieces when adding to your home. Color and texture will also be important decisions when choosing these pieces so it is best to have a color scheme in mind before purchasing or any DIY projects you may take on. The illusions of creating space with the type of furniture you choose can heavily impact the feeling of open space, flow, and how the room is utilized.

You may not get a ton of light into the room you are aiming to brighten up naturally. But chances are you are getting SOME. Play around with the position of furniture and the placement of objects that may absorb light or add to it. For example a large mirror may add to your aesthetic where as placing blocking a window with the couch may not.

This tip is one of my favorites because there are SO many possibilities to be explored. Your walls are a blank canvas that can make or break your room design. Color on the wall is a great start to spicing up your walls but a fun collage of photos and well placed frames and accessories can take things to the next level.

Unless your ballin ‘ out ; your home will MAY not be 100% perfect when you move in. The little touches like fixtures & color are where our personality gets to play and express itself. One interesting way to do this that many forget is to change fixtures and add interesting lighting to your décor. Lamps can be both fashion and function – giving your room light in more ways than one.

Switch out yellow light blubs for bright white light bulbs. The difference in the color of light will make a HUGE difference in the feel of the room, especially in one highly dependent on artificial light.
I have flowers in every room of my home. I love them! My boyfriend is sweet enough to bring me a new bouquet every week which I add too with other bouquets I may pick up . Flower REALLY brighten up a room, they can be the pop of white or light color you need next to a darker piece of furniture you are aiming to add light to. Large colored or patterned floor planters with luscious greenery are a sure way to add a pop of color in a dark corner. Vases, jars, and even cups make great colorful holders for your plants to live in while being true to your décor goals.

Hanging Plants and wall planters are also interesting ways to add color to your space in unexpected areas.
